How can we design an exercise video game narrative for cancer patients that sustains attention and reduces stress?

We worked with the Netherlands Cancer Institute to design an engaging interactive narrative for a 12-week rehabilitation program. The game is controlled by a previously developed exercise bike. Our narrative follows Marwin 3001 on his quest to explore new planets in space and bring back this information to his home, Planet X.

The final prototype developed in Unity.
Our Process
We used a narrative design method to develop our storyline.
We made a flipbook-style paper prototype of our narrative to test it with the exercise bike controller.
We matched our storyline with the recommended cycling interval speeds, given to us by physical therapists at the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
This was one of many instances where we iterated on our narrative design to create a more therapeutic user experience.
This project was completed by an international team of 4 designers and researchers as part of the Master's in Digital Design at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
